I highly suggest using Paint Programs that are easy when retexturing, for example : PaintDotNet.
If you are using a program like Adobe Photoshop, I highly suggest using layers, layers are helpful when you are wanting to change the color and add effects to that layer, so than the original texture isn't scratched if you make a mistake (if you do it that way use CTRL + Z to undo a mistake)
When retexturing try all types of meshes, and texture ideas, make your idea unique.
When retexturing do not pick a common mesh or you might be accused of being a copier.
When you retexture don't forget to put your textures in your Decals or you might be accused of copying.
When retexturing do not just change the color of the texture.
